乌兰察布境内中蒙边境,有数百平方公里的区域都是杳无人烟的低丘戈壁。我先后六次随地方领导和部队首长到边防一线,每次都要到前沿哨所慰问守边战士,都要沿水泥桩铁丝网构筑的边境线百里巡边。

从边防某团团部驻地到所属边防连队,最近的也有五六十公里,远的上百公里,戈壁路颠簸不平,从一个连队到另一个连队,越野车也得行走大半天。一路上,能看到的牧民居住点屈指可数,整个视野里基本上是荒漠草原,多数地段是布满石子沙砾的戈壁,植被十分稀疏,只是零零星星点缀着一丛丛、一簇簇耐旱的戈壁蒿和骆驼草,单调得让进入这一区域的人在车上昏昏欲睡。要是运气好,可以看见远处有成群野驴、黄羊或骆驼出现,眼前便会闪过一丝亮色,这是戈壁草原能见到的最美风景。

快到连队时,远远就能望见低丘上高高矗立的哨楼。汽车开进边防某连驻地,是一个方圆百米的院落,二层红砖小楼,院子里干干净净,两三台保障车整齐地停放在院子一侧。营房前栽种了榆树,被剪成整整齐齐的榆墙,一丛丛榆树给荒凉的戈壁增添了难得一见的绿色,让我感觉这里也充满勃勃生机。

然而,真正在我心中留下深深烙印的,是戍守边关的边防军人,那才是边关一抹永恒的绿色。

走进军营,走近战士,我感受边防军人的军旅生活,感受他们的军人情怀。

守边战士有的来自江南小镇,有的来自熙攘都市,当兵之前,他们是父母膝下的娇儿,从走进边防军营的第一天起,他们稚嫩的肩头就承担了神圣的职责,茫茫戈壁把这些军人锻造成了特别能吃苦、特别能忍耐、特别能负重的铁血男儿。如今是和平年代,他们主要任务是边境线上反走私、反偷渡,防控中蒙双方人畜越境,防范不法人员偷猎野驴、黄羊等国家保护动物。多年来,这些边防连队出色地完成了巡边守边任务,每个连队队部会议室,都挂满了记载连队各项荣誉的牌匾锦旗。

边防连队吃苦受累最多和最寂寞的还不是在哨所值勤的战士,是给连队放羊的穿军装的“羊倌”。大多边防连都饲养上百只羊补给连队生活,连里分配谁去放羊,谁心里都疙疙瘩瘩。来边防当兵,他们不怕爬冰卧雪,一心想着手握钢枪戍边卫国,不曾想枪还没摸几次却拿起了牧羊铲,放羊的战士心里委屈。但军人以服从命令为天职,就是来自水乡泽国从来没有听过放羊这一说的士兵,也都毫无怨言接受了任务。最初不会放,跑到很远的牧点向牧民请教。在戈壁滩放羊,要赶上羊群徒步走出营房十几里以外,一把水壶一袋干粮,每天早出晚归,风雨无阻。他们夏天要忍受零上三四十度的高温酷暑,冬天又要顶着零下二三十度的严寒走进冰天雪地,特别是整天见不到一个人,他们就和石头小草说话、和天上白云说话、自己和自己说话,偶尔唱一首军歌,排遣一下难耐的孤独,相信那种孤独寂寞任何人都无法体会。拖着疲惫的脚步,每天最晚回连队食堂吃饭的是连里的“羊倌”,在连队见到脸膛最黑最粗糙的也是连里的“羊倌”,但是,你和他搭话时,他首先给你敬一个军礼,那一刻,你看到的不是一个放羊的兵,是军营一尊威武的铜像。有个战士当了两年兵,差不多当了一年“羊倌”,他说羊就是他的“士兵”,他就是羊“司令”,他给羊群里的头羊和几十只良种母羊都起了名字,退伍离队时他告别战友,也最后给他的羊喂了一次草料,还一一念叨羊的名字,连长说,当时他哭了,战友们都哭了。

摘 要:本文尝试分析海明威《一个干净明亮的地方》中的各类对比因素,指出这样强烈的对比给读者留下深刻印象,并发人深省。在如今科技高速发展的社会,虚无缥缈无处不在,干净明亮的地方却似乎十分难求了。而人与人之间,更多的谦让、理解、包容和守护也似乎变得尤为重要了。 关键词:干净;明亮;对比;虚无缥缈 海明威,以其传奇的一生和独特的写作风格,在离世几十年后的今天,依然叫世人为他的作品着迷。研究、探寻终也不停,各方解读均有独特韵味。除了脍炙人口的中长篇小说外,秉承其特有的叙述手法,海明威的短篇小说亦给人极其深刻的印象。 《一个干净明亮的地方》,正因他独有的叙事风格、冰山原则的丰富内蕴,让本来平淡的故事触动人心。读罢,掩卷闭目,脑中画面阵阵,挥之不去。 《一个干净明亮的地方》故事十分简单,讲述一个失聪的老者深夜在一家餐馆独自喝酒。围绕老者,两个侍者进行了几组对话。在老者离开后,年老侍者的一些思绪,以及他在酒吧的延伸行为。小说开篇即交代了时间,表明“时间”已经“很晚了”,“大家都离开餐馆”,由此奠定了后面年轻侍者的不耐烦和变相驱赶老人的行为――因为很晚了,他想回家,他“有个老婆在床上等着”他。 故事从开始便一直铺垫形成对比的各种人和事,包括“灯光”和树叶的“阴影”,一明一暗,对比分明;又如分属于“白天”的“尘埃”和“晚上”的“露水”,同样,“白天”“晚上”各为明暗,“尘埃”“露水”则各自给人肮脏和洁净的直观感受;再者,作者将喝酒的老者设定为一个失聪的人,这就意味着他听不到白天的喧嚣,他的世界是宁静的,但文中却说“这个老人喜欢坐得很晚,因为他是个聋子,现在是夜里,十分寂静,他感觉得到跟白天的不同。”夜里与白天不同之处自是因为它的“寂静”,但这句话的表述却似乎并没有那么强烈的前后因果关系。或者我们可以这样假定,老者作为一个听不见声音的人,却能感觉到“夜里”与白天不同的“寂静”――他的世界本就是一片寂静,如何能通过对比不同的喧嚣而得出 “寂静”的感受?如此想来,老者该是个较为敏感的人吧。正如那些讲述真情的影视剧中所言,看人、听话都当用心,眼睛和耳朵所捕捉到的都可能只是表象,要透过表象看到本质。而作者,通过这样强烈对比的系列描述,也让阅读之人渐渐融入了这个故事,于是,便继续阅读下去。 之后的对话,总容易叫人摸不着头脑――因为作者并未表明说话人是谁。这,或许也可认为是海明威写作的一大特点。开篇往往一团迷雾,读者若然读下去了,却自然能从文章的展开中理清思绪。当然,也有观点不尽相同之时。如笔者通过通读故事,前后对照,认为讲述老者想要自杀和被救下的是老年侍者,因为后面的对话里,年轻侍者一直嚷嚷着想早点回家,他说“我真希望他回家去。我从来没有在三点钟以前睡觉过。那时个什么样的睡觉时间呀?”,老年侍者回答“他因为不喜欢睡觉所以才不睡觉。”通过这个对话可以判断出说话的两个人的身份,再继而推断下去,即可知“她侄女会照料他。你刚才说是她把他放下来的。”这两句话出自年轻侍者之口。由此往回推断便可知说老者有许多钱的该是老年侍者,而不是年轻侍者。通篇故事看下来也会发现,了解老者较多的正是老年侍者,年轻人连多看老人一眼也不大愿意。于是便不会有“年轻招待认为老人很富裕没有理由自杀。在他看来,只有贫穷才会自杀。”“老招待不同意这种观点”,“老招待把老人自杀的原因归结为年老体弱、失去亲人的孤独和痛苦”。[1]当然,对文字的理解是可以多样化的,故事亦然。作者之所以开篇便使用含糊的表述,让人慢慢猜寻说话之人,除了个人习惯之外,大约也是想多些理解的`层面吧,毕竟,文学是该多样精彩些好。 作者的设定,一直继续着如开篇般的对比,即使是人物――老年侍者和年轻侍者――强烈对比的年龄、各自相悖的观点、拼命想回家睡觉和总是失眠的人、对老者的关心和淡漠、对路人截然相反的看法,所有这些,都是作者给予读者的深刻观感,在对比中加深读者的印象,在对比中升华故事的内涵。 故事继续在对比中进行着。“树叶”“阴影”里的老者,街上明亮的“街灯”,大兵闪亮的位在“领章”上的“铜号码”;少女和大兵和匆忙,餐馆里坐在“随风轻轻飘拂的树叶的阴影里”老者的恬静。叫侍者添酒时,老者的动作是“敲敲茶托”,这么淡然的动作,一点不像已经喝醉的人,他不吵、不闹,即使在年轻侍者倒酒时无礼地诅咒“你应该在上星期就自杀了”,他也只是淡淡把“手指一晃”,说“再加一点”。如前所述,老者即使是个聋子,却能感受到黑夜由于“寂静”而和白天的区别,如此敏感的人,即使听不到年轻侍者的言语,断然也能从他的态度上感受出端倪,但他没有表露出不快,更没有大发雷霆,他只是安安静静地叫酒、喝酒,然后在被年轻侍者叫嚣着变相赶走时,也不忘留下小费,不卑不亢走离餐馆。尽管“脚步不挺稳”,却依然给人一种王者的威严,一种骨子里的尊贵和气质。他有很多钱,或许他是社会名流,上层人物,是叱咤风云之人,即使如今是个聋了的老者,他却依然是个“干干净净”、“很有神气”的老人家。在孤冷空寂的晚年,想要在这个“干净明亮的地方”寻求少许光亮、些许温暖,却也不能。如同老年侍者离开时的内心思绪:“人所需要的只是虚无缥缈和亮光以及干干净净和井井有条。” “一切都是虚无缥缈的,一切都是为了虚无缥缈。”世界本就始于混沌,开端于“虚无缥缈”,生活是为了“虚无缥缈”,结局也归于“虚无缥缈”――故事所呈现的主题如此看来难免让人觉得负面、悲观,但作品是作者的孩子,作品中掺杂作者的情绪和思想是再平常不过了,如同故事中说到老者的自杀,作者海明威不就是以自杀结束了生命么?而喝酒、孤寂、干净、“神气”又是作者颓然心绪下掩不住的傲然气质,即使痛苦,也绝不表露出来,不会让自己看起来邋遢、颓废、无理取闹、大叫大嚷。作品是作者灵魂的延续,忧国忧民的金庸笔下的大侠多是如他所持理念的“侠之大者,为国为民”,而风格独树一帜古龙则多是描述如他一般嗜酒、痴爱美色,却又愿意为了朋友两肋插刀的江湖怪侠。海明威亦是如此。 除了表述心中感念,反映当下时代境况也是各类作品的常态。《一个干净明亮的地方》尽管写于遥远的1933年,放到如今高速发展的社会中,也不觉突兀。故事中的年轻侍者,难道不是时下年轻人的一个缩影么?匆忙、好奇,为了自己,会自私、会无礼、会冷漠,但又充满年轻的朝气和自信,他们有着美好的信念和前景,却或许身在“干净明亮的地方”而不自知,不懂珍惜,不懂善待。科技的快速发展只越来越拉远了人与人之间心灵的距离,尽管交流便捷了,真诚却似乎越是匮乏了。看看故事中那个酒吧侍者便知,嘲讽、冷漠或许就是他们习惯的面具了,面具下究竟为何,大概早也“虚无缥缈”了吧。老者,无论是喝酒的老者,还是多愁上的年老侍者,其历经岁月沧桑,磨去了自信,淡却了漠然,留下的只有寂静和平和,他们善良、坚强、敏感、随和,他们努力地在满世界的“虚无缥缈”中寻求光亮和洁净,寻求那个“干净明亮的地方”,珍惜找寻到的“干净明亮的地方”,并愿意为需要的人守护这片“干净明亮的地方”,至于结果如何,如老年侍者在“有架闪光的蒸汽压咖啡机”的酒吧中的微笑那样――不重要了。失眠的人,总是“许多”,明天还会有光亮出现,还会看到那个“干净明亮的地方”。参考文献: [1]毛坚舫。 孤寂的心灵 自尊的生活――论海明威《一个干净明亮的地方》的主题[J]. 浙江大学学报(人文社会科学版),, 30(4): 53-56. It was very late and everyone had left the cafe except an old man who sat in the shadow the leaves of the tree made against the electric light. In the day time the street was dusty, but at night the dew settled the dust and the old man liked to sit late because he was deaf and now at night it was quiet and he felt the difference. The two waiters inside the cafe knew that the old man was a little drunk, and while he was a good client they knew that if he became too drunk he would leave without paying, so they kept watch on him.

时间很晚了,大家都离开餐馆,只有一个老人还坐在树叶挡住灯光的阴影里。白天里,街上尽是尘埃,到得晚上,露水压住了尘埃。这个老人喜欢坐得很晚,因为他是个聋子,现在是夜里,十分寂静,他感觉得到跟白天的不同。呆在餐馆里的两个侍者知道这老人有点儿醉了,他虽然是个好主顾,可是,他们知道,如果他喝得太醉了,他会不付账就走,所以他们一直在留神他。

“You'll be drunk,” the waiter said. The old man looked at him. The waiter went away.

“你会喝醉的,”侍者说。老人朝他看了一看。侍者走开了。

“He'll stay all night,” he said to his colleague. “I'm sleepy now. I never get into bed before three o'clock. He should have killed himself last week.”

“他会通宵呆在这里,”他对他的同事说。“我这会儿真想睡。我从来没有在三点钟以前睡觉过。他应该在上星期就自杀了。”

The waiter took the brandy bottle and another saucer from the counter inside the cafe and marched out to the old man's table. He put down the saucer and poured the glass full of brandy.

侍者从餐馆里的柜台上拿了一瓶白兰地和另一个茶托,大步走了出来,送到老人桌上。他放下茶托,把杯子倒满了白兰地。

“You should have killed yourself last week,” he said to the deaf man. The old man motioned with his finger. “A little more,” he said. The waiter poured on into the glass so that the brandy slopped over and ran down the stem into the top saucer of the pile. “Thank you,” the old man said. The waiter took the bottle back inside the cafe. He sat down at the table with his colleague again.

“你应该在上星期就自杀了,”他对那个聋子说。老人把手指一晃。“再加一点,”他说。侍者又往杯子里倒酒,酒溢了出来,顺着高脚杯的脚流进了一叠茶托的第一只茶托。“谢谢你,”老人说。侍者把酒瓶拿回到餐馆去。他又同他的同事坐在桌旁。

“He's drunk now,” he said.

“He's drunk every night.”

“What did he want to kill himself for?”

“How should I know.”

“How did he do it?”

“He hung himself with a rope.”

“Who cut him down?”

“他这会儿喝醉了,”他说。

“他每天晚上都喝醉。”

“他干吗要自杀呀?”

“我怎么知道。”

“他上次是怎样自杀的?”

“他用绳子上吊。”

“谁把他放下来的?”

“His niece.”

“Why did they do it?”

“Fear for his soul.”

“How much money has he got?” “He's got plenty.”

“He must be eighty years old.”

“Anyway I should say he was eighty.”

“他侄女。”

“干吗要把他放下来?”

“为他的灵魂担忧。”

“他有多少钱?”

“他准有八十岁喽。”

“不管怎样,我算准他有八十岁。”

“I wish he would go home. I never get to bed before three o'clock. What kind of hour is that to go to bed?”

“我真希望他回家去。我从来没有在三点钟以前睡觉过。那是个什么样的睡觉时间呀?”

“He stays up because he likes it.”

“他因为不喜欢睡觉所以才不睡觉。”

“He's lonely. I'm not lonely. I have a wife waiting in bed for me.”

“He had a wife once too.”

“他从前也有过老婆。”

“A wife would be no good to him now.”

“这会儿有老婆对他可没好处。”

“You can't tell. He might be better with a wife.”

“话可不能这么说。他有老婆也许会好些。”

“His niece looks after him. You said she cut him down.”

“他侄女会照料他。你刚才说是她把他放下来的。”

“I know.” “I wouldn't want to be that old. An old man is a nasty thing.”

“我知道。” “我才不要活得那么老。老人邋里邋遢。”

“Not always. This old man is clean. He drinks without spilling. Even now, drunk. Look at him.”

“不一定都是这样。这个老人干干净净。他喝啤酒来并不滴滴答答往外漏。哪怕这会儿喝醉了。你瞧他。”

“I don't want to look at him. I wish he would go home. He has no regard for those who must work.”

“我才不想瞧他。我希望他回家去。他并不关心那些非干活不可的人。”

The old man looked from his glass across the square, then over at the waiters.

那老人从酒杯上抬起头来望望广场,又望望那两个侍者。

“Another brandy,” he said, pointing to his glass. The waiter who was in a hurry came over.

“再来杯白兰地,”他指着杯子说。那个着急的侍者跑了过去。

“Finished,” he said, speaking with that omission of syntax stupid people employ when talking to drunken people or foreigners. “No more tonight. Close now.”

“没啦,”他不顾什么句法地说,蠢汉在对醉汉或外国人说话时就这么说法。“今晚上没啦。打烊啦。”

“Another,” said the old man.

“再来一杯,”那老人说。

“No. Finished.” The waiter wiped the edge of the table with a towel and shook his head.

“不,没啦,”侍者一边拿块毛巾揩揩桌沿,一边摇摇头。

The old man stood up, slowly counted the saucers, took a leather coin purse from his pocket and paid for the drinks, leaving half a peseta tip. The waiter watched him go down the street, a very old man walking unsteadily but with dignity.

老人站了起来,慢慢地数着茶托,打口袋里摸出一只装硬币的起夹子来,付了酒账,又放下半个比塞塔作小账。那个侍者瞅着他顺着大街走去,这个年纪很大的人走起路来,虽然脚步不挺稳,却很有神气。

“Why didn't you let him stay and drink?” the unhurried waiter asked. They were putting up the shutters. “It is not half-past two.”

“你干吗不让他呆下来喝酒呢?”那个不着急的侍者问道。他们这会儿正在拉下百叶窗。“还不到二点半呢。”

“I want to go home to bed.”

“我要回家睡觉了。”

“What is an hour?”

“一个钟头算啥?”

“More to me than to him.”

“他无所谓,我可很在乎。”

“An hour is the same.”

“反正是一个钟头。”

“You talk like an old man yourself. He can buy a bottle and drink at home.”

“你说得就象那个老人一模一样。他可以买啤酒回家去喝嘛。”

“It's not the same.”

“这可不一样。”

“No, it is not,” agreed the waiter with a wife. He did not wish to be unjust. He was only in a hurry.

“是呀,这是不一样的。”那个有老婆的侍者表示同意说。他不希望做得不公道,他只是有点儿着急。

“And you? You have no fear of going home before your usual hour?”

“那么你呢?你不怕不到你通常的时间就回家吗?”

“Are you trying to insult me?”

“你想侮辱我吗?”

“No, hombre, only to make a joke.”

“不,老兄,只是开开玩笑。”

“No,” the waiter who was in a hurry said, rising from pulling down the metal shutters. “I have confidence. I am all confidence.”

“不,”那个着急的侍者一边说,一边拉下了铁百叶窗后站了起来。“我有信心。我完全有信心。”

“You have youth, confidence, and a job,” the older waiter said. “You have everything.”

“你有青春,信心,又有工作,”那个年纪大些的侍者说,“你什么都有了。”

“And what do you lack?”

“那么,你缺少什么呢?”

“Everything but work.”

“除了工作,什么都缺。”

“You have everything I have.”

“我有什么,你也都有了。”

“No. I have never had confidence and I am not young.”

“不,我从来就没有信心,我也不年轻了。”

“Come on. Stop talking nonsense and lock up.”

“好啦,好啦,别乱弹琴了,把门锁上吧。”

“I am of those who like to stay late at the cafe,” the older waiter said.

“With all those who do not want to go to bed. With all those who need a light for the night.”

“我是属于那种喜欢在餐馆呆得很晚的人,”那个年纪大些的侍者说。“我同情那种不想睡觉的人,同情那种夜里要有亮光的人。”

“I want to go home and into bed.”

“我要回家睡觉去了。”

“We are of two different kinds,” the older waiter said. He was now dressed to go home. “It is not only a question of youth and confidence although those things are very beautiful. Each night I am reluctant to close up because there may be some one who needs the cafe.”

“我们是不一样的,”那个年纪大些的侍者说。这会儿,他穿好衣服要回家了。“这不光是个年轻和信心的问题,虽然青春和信心都是十分美妙的。我每天晚上都很不愿意打烊,因为可能有人要上餐馆。”

“Hombre, there are bodegas open all night long.”

“老兄,开通宵的酒店有的是。”

“You do not understand. This is a clean and pleasant cafe. It is well lighted. The light is very good and also, now, there are shadows of the leaves.”

“再见啦,”那个年轻的侍者说。

“Good night,” the other said. Turning off the electric light he continued the conversation with himself, It was the light of course but it is necessary that the place be clean and pleasant. “What's yours?” asked the barman.

“你要什么?”酒吧招待问道。

“Otro loco mas,” said the barman and turned away.

“又是个神经病,”酒吧招待说过后,转过头去。

“A little cup,” said the waiter.

“来一小杯,”那个侍者说。

The barman poured it for him.

酒吧招待倒了一杯给他。

“The light is very bright and pleasant but the bar is unpolished,” the waiter said.

“灯很亮,也很愉快,只是这个酒吧没有擦得很光洁,”侍者说。

The barman looked at him but did not answer. It was too late at night for conversation.

酒吧招待看看他,但是,没有答腔,夜深了,不便谈话。

“You want another copita?” the barman asked.

“你要再来一小杯吗?”酒吧招待问道。

“No, thank you,” said the waiter and went out. He disliked bars and bodegas. A clean, well-lighted cafe was a very different thing. Now, without thinking further, he would go home to his room. He would lie in the bed and finally, with daylight, he would go to sleep. After all, he said to himself, it's probably only insomnia. Many must have it.

“不,谢谢你,”侍者说罢,走出去了。他不喜欢酒吧和酒店。一个干净明亮的餐馆又是另一回事。现在他不再想什么了,他要回家,到自己屋里去。他要去躺在床上,最后,天亮了,他就要睡觉了。到头来,他对自己说,大概又只是失眠。许多人一定都失眠。
